Poets celebrate the life and legacy of Janice Mirikitani. Featuring San Francisco Poet Laureates past and present, Tongo Eisen-Martin (January 2021 – present), Kim Shuck (June 2017 – January 2021), Alejandro Murguía (July 2012 – December 2015), Jack Hirschman (January 2006 – January 2008, devorah major (April 2002 – April 2004). Along with many esteemed and loved Bay Area and beyond poets, Aileen Cassinetto, Susan Kitazawa, Genny Lim, Lauren Ito, Kimi Sugioka, Dr. Mary Wardell Ghirarduzzi, Michael Warr and Nelly Wong.

Janice Mirikitani was a visionary, a revolutionary artist and the very embodiment of San Francisco’s compassionate spirit. As a poet, including as Poet Laureate of this City from 2000 to 2002, she used the power of her words to further the fight for equality and to call for a more just and peaceful world. Through her work at Glide Memorial Church, along with her husband the Reverend Cecil Williams, she served our most vulnerable residents for decades and provided a place of refuge and love for all. She was boundless in her energy and in her devotion to this City and to her fellow San Franciscans.

Wall + Response: Heather Bourbeau, Aileen Cassinetto, Tongo Eisen-Martin & Chris Stroffolino

Justice-Four-Luis-Gongora

Booksmith and The Bindery are proud to host a four-event series presented by Clarion Alley Mural Project (CAMP) called Wall + Response, featuring sixteen Bay Area poets responding to the social/ political/ racial/ justice narratives of four murals on Clarion Alley.

Curated by CAMP artist and organizer Megan Wilson (wall) and poet Maw Shein Win (response), the first event in the series features Heather Bourbeau, Aileen Cassinetto, Tongo Eisen-Martin and Chris Stroffolino responding to the mural Justice for Luís D. Góngora Pat by Marina Perez-Wong and Elaine Chu, working with Justice4Luis.

Justice For Luís D. Góngora Pat (2018) is a memorial to Luís Demetrio Góngora Pat, a 46-year-old man – a father, husband, son, brother, and friend to many – from the Mayan village of Teabo, in the Mexican province of Yucatán. Góngora Pat was killed by two San Francisco police officers in an act of police brutality on April 7, 2016 at the encampment he was living on Shotwell Street following an eviction. Perez-Wong and Chu presented the mural to Luís’ family and their supporters in an emotional ceremony on the two-year anniversary of his death. The Justice4Luís campaign has continued its work towards justice and restoration in the name of Luis Góngora Pat through their advocacy and organizing efforts.

This virtual event is free and all ages, but RSVP is required.
