The appointment of a new poet laureate is always a symbol of hope, a cause for celebration, and a call to action. I’ve known Tony for more than five years now, and I’m deeply honored to have been one of his community mentors. Antonio López, native son of East Palo Alto, dwells in that unique terrain few inhabit where poetry meets policy. He is that trained scholar who makes poetry exciting because he elevates the art form, and at the same time, opens the door wide so that it is shared by all. He is also that idealistic friend who inspires us to think bigger, dream bolder, and move through the world with intention. Tony is the hope, the dream, and the epitome of what immigrant families like mine came to America for, and I am overjoyed and eager to support his journey, wherever it takes him.
