The Nature of Our Times: A Message from the Editors

The Nature of Our Times: Poems on America’s Lands, Waters, Wildlife, and Other Natural Wonders was originally envisioned to be a companion to the first ever U.S. National Nature Assessment (NNA1). We have recently learned that the U.S. Global Change Research Program has been ordered to discontinue their work on the National Nature Assessment. However, the team of scientists working on this report, led by Dr. Phillip Levin, is currently pursuing other avenues to continue to build on and publish their work. We will share any information about this as we come to know more.

Meanwhile, we want to reassure readers and our contributors that we remain committed to this anthology—forthcoming in Fall 2025 from Paloma Press in collaboration with Wick Poetry Center at Kent State University and Poets for Science. Our online Gallery, which currently features over 1,200 poems, is an American story and literary landscape as sweeping as the ecosystems that inspired it. Through this project, we hope to continue amplifying the National Nature Assessment and the work of the many scientists around the country who have contributed their time and expertise for the public good.
